Your business deserves the best protection and the first line of defence for any property is its perimeter. If this isn’t secure, you’re just trying to protect an open plot of land. So, let’s take a good old look at the benefits you can expect from a perimeter fence, should you decide to erect one – and of course you should, if you haven’t already.

5 Benefits of Perimeter Fencing

There are many advantages of perimeter/security fencing that you should consider when marking your perimeter borders. Benefits include:

  • 1) Durability
  • 2) Security
  • 3) Parking
  • 4) Safety
  •  Low maintenance

We’ll also explain the security ratings that perimeter fences are tested against to gain accredited status as a recognised security perimeter.

How Security Fences are Rated

The Loss Prevention Certification Board (LCPB) is responsible for setting the standards for and approving security rated products. They work with governments, security agencies, police and others to certify their fencing systems. The LPS 1175 certification was introduced to ensure buyers knew the strength and security level of their fence. Each fence model is subjected to a set test standard and must withstand a specific type of attack for a minimum number of minutes. Below, you’ll find the ratings, expressed as ‘SR’ then an increasing number, 1 being the lowest, 5 being the highest rating.

Security Ratings Explained

Fencing certification ranges form SR1 to SR8, with SR1 proven against minimal levels of force and SR5 currently being the highest level available for fencing. These are the standards from LPS 1175:

  • SR1: Opportunistic attack by bodily physical force and stealth using only category A hand tools for a maximum of 10 minutes.
  • SR2: A determined opportunistic attack by bodily physical force by stealth but this time employing hand tools form category A and B for up to 15 minutes.
  • SR3: Deliberate forced entry of a protected premises using the category A, B and C tools, including battery powered tools for a maximum time of 20 minutes.
  • SR4: An experienced forced entry attempt for up to 30 minutes using higher level tools, including category A, B, C and D but also heavy tools including axes, sledgehammer, steel wedges, drills, disc grinder and jigsaw.
  • SR5: The most serious fencing security rating. Rated against a serious attempt at forced entry with high end battery powered cutting tools used by fire and rescue teams for at least 30 minutes.

What locations are optimised by security fencing?

Security fencing is best suited for both the commercial and residential places, including:

  • Department Stores
  • Hospitals
  • Hospitality locales
  • Office buildings
  • Athletic facilities
  • Warehouses
  • Factories
  • Docklands

All of the above concerns house expensive or dangerous equipment, or their occupants will be compromised in a unique way should intruders enter the premises or breach a secure building complex. Perimeter fencing is built to delay any intrusion and ideally prevents it all together. No matter what size of business you operate, a safe perimeter is a secure perimeter.
